Sumter County Court Dockets Defined
A docket is the court's chronological event list. It can note when a complaint was filed, service returned, a motion entered, a hearing set, a plea received, an order signed, or a judgment issued. Criminal dockets may also reflect bond, arraignment, sentencing, probation, costs, failure to appear, or a warrant event. A short entry is an index to activity. It is not proof of what the linked document says and may not show a private or sealed filing.
Circuit Clerk Devon A. James maintains Circuit and District Court records. Circuit dockets cover felony prosecutions, larger civil cases, domestic relations, and appeals. District dockets cover misdemeanors, traffic, small claims, unlawful detainers, lower civil cases, and preliminary felony matters. Probate cases use the Judge of Probate system. Livingston and York municipal matters may remain with city channels. Sheriff Brian S. Harris keeps law-enforcement records, not court dockets.
The official Sumter Alacourt docket endpoint is the county-focused online entry.
Its location value identifies Sumter County as LOC=58 within the statewide court system.

Alacourt Access or Just One Look is the official public portal for Alabama trial court records. It supports Civil, Domestic, Criminal, and Traffic case access. Sumter County does not have an independent full docket database. Account steps or fees may apply, and selected case details can require payment. Gather the complete party name, case number if known, approximate year, and likely court division.
- Open Alacourt or the Sumter location endpoint.
- Confirm that Circuit or District Court is the record keeper.
- Enter the case number, or use the party name when the number is unknown.
- Confirm the displayed case number and name before opening paid detail.
- Read events in date order and verify a hearing with the Circuit Clerk when attendance matters.
The Alacourt selected-case screen confirms basic case identity.
The visible case number and name help prevent opening the wrong Sumter County docket.

No complete public sample docket was captured, so these fields reflect the researched trial court record inventory. Availability varies by case. Read the date with the event label, then look for the party or judge tied to it. A hearing setting can later be continued, and a filed charge can later be amended or dismissed.

Sumter Courts and Docket Channels
Court level controls where a schedule or event list can be found. Circuit and District Court cases route through Alacourt and the Circuit Clerk. The office is at 115 Franklin St., Livingston, phone (205) 652-2291, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Mail requests go to PO Box 936, Livingston, AL 35470-0936.

- Probate Court uses the Sumter Probate service or Probate Annex, not the Circuit Clerk docket route.

The official Sumter traffic page says the date on a citation is not a trial date. A defendant seeking a trial must appear on that listed date and plead not guilty. If a Livingston citation cannot be found, the city directs questions to Rhonda Bibbs at 205-652-2505.
The Alabama AOC E-Forms portal organizes forms by case type.
A filed form can create a docket event, but the forms library is not a case search.
Sumter Docket Versus Case File
A docket tracks the sequence of a case. The full record contains the papers behind those entries, such as complaints, answers, motions, plea papers, judgments, and sentencing orders. The docket supports status checks. The full file is needed to read the court's exact words, the parties' arguments, or all terms of an order.
| Docket | Full Case Record | |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Dated list of events | Filed documents and court orders |
| Access | May require an account or fee | May require payment, mail, or a clerk visit |
| Use | Track status and dates | Read the substance of filings and rulings |
Alacourt lists document pricing at $5 for the first 20 pages and 50 cents for each later page. Ask the clerk for current courthouse copy and certification costs. The official local research did not provide those specific clerk fees.
Interpret Sumter County Court Dockets
An arraignment is the criminal hearing where the defendant hears the charge and enters a plea. A motion asks the judge to act. A continuance moves an event to a later date. A disposition is the result of a case or count. FTA means failure to appear and can lead to a warrant, license action in traffic court, higher fines, or bond forfeiture.
Do not treat “filed” as “granted.” Look for a later order. Do not treat “charged” as “convicted.” Check the final disposition for each count. A dismissed case and an expunged case are also different. Dismissal is an outcome, while expungement limits normal public access after a statutory process and order.
For an absent or unclear event, call the Circuit Clerk with the case number and date. Older or non-digitized material may need a counter or mail request. Sealed cases, juvenile dockets, protected domestic information, and sensitive identifiers may be withheld or redacted.
A hearing entry should be read as a set of linked fields. The date and time identify when the event is set. The event type explains whether it is an arraignment, motion hearing, trial setting, sentencing, or another appearance. The location and judge identify where the matter is assigned. A later continuance or order can replace the earlier setting, so the newest relevant entry controls only after the clerk confirms that no more recent change exists.
Financial docket entries also need context. A posted amount may represent a fine, court cost, restitution, bond, or payment. Those categories are not interchangeable. A traffic payment can record a plea and disposition when payment without appearance is allowed. Other violations require an appearance and cannot be closed just because a payment site exists. The Sumter traffic page is the authority for local eligible offenses and current case instructions.
Criminal dockets can list a complaint, warrant, indictment, bond order, preliminary hearing, arraignment, plea, motions, sentence, probation, and restitution. Civil dockets can list a complaint, answer, service return, default request, judgment, garnishment, execution, or satisfaction. Domestic records can include divorce, custody, support, and protection matters, though the public docket may omit sensitive documents. These event types explain why a name match should always be checked against court and case type.
Public access is not the same as unrestricted access. Alabama Code Section 36-12-40 supports access to public writings, and Section 36-12-41 addresses copies and lawful charges. Juvenile case information is confidential under Section 12-15-133. Sealed matters, mental-health material, adoption records, and protected identifiers may be absent or redacted. The Circuit Clerk can state whether a docket is public and what request process applies, but cannot give legal advice.
A mail request should include the party names, case number if known, approximate year, court level, case type, and specific entries or papers sought. Ask the clerk whether a plain copy or certified copy is needed and what the current fee and payment method are. The official research did not locate local counter or certification rates. Alacourt's online terms state document pricing of $5 for the first 20 pages and 50 cents for each later page, calculated before the charge.
AlaFile serves another purpose. A self-represented party can register for electronic notices, print the form, and take it to the Circuit Clerk with state-issued photo identification. After processing, that party can receive electronic orders by email. AlaFile is a filing and notice system, while Alacourt is the public trial court record route. Confusing the two can lead a searcher to an account screen that does not perform the needed public docket lookup.
Probate docket searches are another exception. The Sumter Probate online service has a separate “Look up Probate Case Records” path, plus account login and search instructions. The Probate Annex is at 115 Marshall Street, Livingston, with phone 205-652-7281, fax 205-652-6206, and weekday hours from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Estate, guardianship, conservatorship, and probate filings should not be requested from the Circuit Clerk merely because both offices serve Sumter County.
The AlaFile information site explains Alabama electronic filing.
Electronic filing creates docket activity, while Alacourt and the clerk remain the public review routes.
Note: Verify a hearing directly with the clerk because continuances and restricted entries may change what a public screen shows.
